Course Communication
For questions not related to appointment scheduling, the course will
utilize a discussion forum. TBD. Grades will be shared on Compass.
Course Objectives
- Gain insight into the infrastructure and scale of data science in
medicine
- Learn and understand the practical aspects of data science in
medicine
- Demonstrate the ability to employ principles of data science in a
medical context
- Draw important connections from the project to translation and
practice
- Carry out a well-motivated and substantive data project and
subsequent analysis
Designing a Data Science Project
- Your team must select a clinically-relevant project of sufficient
difficulty focused on an iteratively-refined data analysis
- DSPs may not be submission of previous work, but may extend previous
IDEA Projects if scope is sufficient
- DSPs must cover distinct topics from the Capstone Project and may
not be a software algorithm related to the Capstone device hardware
- However, common connections such as disease or medical domain and
sharing of mentors between DSP and Capstone is allowed
- DSPs may be significant extensions of the provided, domain-specific
template projects or use other public data
sets (see other resources)
- Data used in the DSP must be available at the time of the project
proposal and not contain personal identifiable information
Course Timeline
Phase 1: Project Exploration and Proposal
During this phase, you have to main products to submit: a
team confirmation form (before May 7) and a
project proposal (before Jun 18). You also need to find
two mentors (one from engineering side and one from clinical side) and
ask them to fill out the mentor confirmation form.
Please note that you do not need to wait until the deadline. These forms
are available right after the kick-off meeting on Mar 15. The proposal
can be submitted after we receive your team confirmation. You will also
need to review and score 3-5 proposals from your peers
once you submit the proposal.
- Attend the kick-off meeting at March 15, 2021.
- Exploration
- Find a teammate
- Each team should have two members
- All members must be from the same graduating year
- If you cannot find a teammate, please let the course directors
know
- Explore template projects to get access
to example datasets and tools.
- Find and contact engineering and clinical mentors (list of faculty volunteers). Course directors
available to assist in this process with form letters and mentor
description documents.
- If you would like to utilize additional computing resources such as
AWS and GCP, please fill out [this
form] as soon as possible.
- Team confirmation is due by May 7, 2021 (\(\frac{10}{3}\)% of total score)
- Project Proposal is due by Jun 18, 2021 (10% of
total score)
- Your team should fill out the [proposal
submission form]
- Can be submitted anytime after team confirmation form is
received
- Review proposals from other teams. Due by July 2,
2021 (\(\frac{10}{3}\)% of total score)
- Each student will need to review at least 3-5 other teams
- Please use the [proposal evaluation link] to fill out the proposal
evaluation
- Both students and mentors will participant in the evaluation
Phase 2: Working on the Project
Two main products will be submitted once you complete this:
final poster and presentation and final
report. Additionally, you need to perform a midterm
survey and a presentation peer review. There
are two possible schedules when working on them:
- Regular track
- Midterm survey by Oct 15, 2021 (10% of total score)
- Poster and presentation video submission by Feb 25, 2022 (35% of
total score)
- Peer presentation evaluation by Mar 4, 2022 (\(\frac{10}{3}\)% of total score)
- Final report due at April 15, 2022 (35% of total score)
- Fast track
- Midterm survey by Sep 10, 2021 (10% of total score)
- Poster and presentation video submission by Dec 3, 2022 (35% of
total score)
- Final report also due at Dec 3, 2022 (35% of total score)
- Peer presentation evaluation by Mar 4, 2022 (\(\frac{10}{3}\)% of total score)
Further requirements are provided below:
- You need to schedule at least one meeting with each of your mentors
after you submit the proposal and before the midterm survey
- The midterm survey contains
- [Student survey] :
you will provide feedback for project progression, your teammates and
mentors
- [Mentor survey] :
mentors will provide feedback for your team progress
- You need to schedule at least one meeting with each of your mentors
after the midterm survey and before the poster submission
- The project presentation involves
- Complete the final survey by Feb 25, 2022.
- Submit a project poster in the survey. More info can found here.
- Record a 15-20 minute presentation, and provide a sharable link in
the survey form. You may consider using Zoom or mediaspace.
- The video will be shared to other students, mentors, and course
directors for evaluation. The evaluation form can be found at [Presentation
Evaluation Form]
- Results of the evaluation will be used to decide the presentation
group at the May 5th Capstone Data Science Joint Forum.
- The final report involves
- A short technical paper/report no longer than 8 pages without
including tables, figures, or references. [Final Report Submssion
Link]
- The final reports will be evaluated by mentors and course instructor
using the [final report evaluation form TBD]
- Presentation / Poster / Final Report formatting guidelines,
resources and grading criteria can be found here.
Bonus Phase: Innovation Week Presentation
Based on the evaluation of the project poster and presentation, we
will select a few teams to present at the Innovation Week, April 2022.
The selection criteria will be based off of [presentation
evaluation form] and the evaluation rubrics eventually posted here.
